When someone mentions “The Farmer" in conjunction with drag racing, you immediately know they're talking about Arnie Beswick, one of the most recognized names in the history of the sport. This International Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductee has been racing for over fifty years and boasts ten straight world series class event wins during the 1950s and 60s.
Starting in 1962, Arnie began campaigning a new 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty with a special factory paint job. Dubbed the “Passionate Poncho", the car was one in a line of several winning drag cars that came before it, and was succeeded by many more that came after. The Passionate Poncho featured a 421 cubic inch motor and an aluminum front end to help reduce the weight on the race track.
Arnie competed in the Super Stock class, across the central and southeastern states. Thrilling races against names like Don Nicholson, Phil Bonner and Hubert Platt pleased an ever-increasing group of fans. Piloting the Passionate Poncho and later versions in 1963 appropriately named Passionate Poncho II and III, Arnie won the U/S class at the World Series as well as winning Stock Eliminator at the 1962 Daytona Winter Nationals. Arnie and the Passionate Poncho were a force to be reckoned with!
